In Kazakhstan, every year on September 3, the “Day of the kazakh tazy and tobet dogs” will now be officially celebrated. This was stated in Government Resolution No. 278, adopted on April 15.

According to the new order, the list of national holidays has been expanded with this special date. This initiative aims to preserve and increase the population of the tazy and tobet dog breeds, which are considered national heritage.

Previously, in 2022, the President issued an order to protect these breeds. After that, legal frameworks for their preservation and development were created, and practical measures were gradually implemented.

In recent years, experts have noted a decline in the number of these rare breeds and emphasized the need to strengthen protection measures. In 2024, the tazy breed was officially recognized at the international level, and its standards are defined based on criteria developed by Kazakhstan.

For reference, tazy is an ancient hunting dog whose images can be found in thousand-year-old rock carvings. In the lives of nomadic peoples, it was valued for its speed and hunting skills. Tobet, on the other hand, is a large guardian dog that has protected livestock from wolves for centuries and is known for its loyalty.

Today, both of these rare breeds are under threat of extinction. The reasons include crossbreeding with other breeds and a decline in traditional breeding practices. Therefore, Kazakhstan is implementing special programs to preserve and increase their numbers.
