Gorgeous, Rare Dogs Might Be Gone in 2 Decades—and One Woman Is Fighting To Save Them originally appeared on Parade Pets.

Some dog breeds are so rare, you might never see one in your lifetime, and Skye Terriers are heartbreakingly close to joining that list. With their long, flowing coats, soulful eyes, and rich history, these gorgeous pups are facing a dangerous decline in numbers, and experts warn they could disappear entirely within the next 20 years.

One devoted Skye Terrier mom on TikTok isn’t letting that happen without a fight. Through education, advocacy, and a lot of love, she’s working to raise awareness about the breed and to inspire more people to welcome Skye Terriers into their homes before it’s too late. Her mission is simple: keep these remarkable dogs from becoming just a memory.

In the video uploaded to the TikTok account @bethwealdenwoofers, it explains that only 36 Skye Terrier puppies were born in 2023! That’s such a tiny amount!

One person commented, “I love learning more about vulnerable breeds. Let’s spread the word.” Another person added, “Such a wonderful breed and she’s adorable.”

Why Skye Terriers Are Becoming Endangered

The American Kennel Club explains, “Though the Skye Terrier was immensely popular in the Victorian Era, their numbers have declined dramatically. Just 42 were registered with the UK Kennel Club in 2012. Even though their numbers are small, Skyes continue to be entered in shows as formidable competitors. As recently as 2014, a Skye Terrier named Charlie won Best in Show at the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship.”

Another fascinating article explains why the breed is becoming endangered, and Ms. Kisko, the secretary of the Kennel Club, says, “Much of this is about the profile of the dog, whether or not people are aware that the breeds exist. Some of the problems we have with the vulnerable breeds is that people have simply forgotten that they are there.”

If you’re interested in getting one of these gorgeous pups of your very own, please investigate ethical breeders in your area. They sure are gorgeous!
