As the festive season is upon us, many lucky people may be receiving a new puppy to mark the occasion. However, it’s crucial to remember that a dog isn’t just for Christmas, but for life.

Ensuring your pet grows up in the right environment and providing plenty of structure are key. And neglecting to do so can lead to issues further down the line, which is why experts are on hand to assist.

Will Atherton, a top clinical canine behaviourist with nearly a million followers on TikTok, took to the social media platform to share a vital tip for new dog owners. Apparently, there’s a rule you must adhere to when raising a dog.

For optimal results, this guidance should be followed from day one – even though it can be tricky to stick to!

While it’s almost impossible not to want to spend every moment with your new puppy, it’s essential to occasionally give them some alone time.

This helps them get accustomed to being by themselves from an early age, which is vital for their development.

Failure to do this could result in them not developing healthy habits. It doesn’t have to be anything drastic – it could be encouraging them to take solo naps or leaving them at home when you pop out to the shops.

Start this from day one, otherwise your puppy might develop separation anxiety.

Will added: “Teaching them to spend time alone is okay. You need to have a plan and be implementing that plan.”

If executed correctly from the first day, your dog will “know how to settle down and be a relaxed, calm, well mannered canine companion”.

However, if you haven’t been following these tips until now, don’t worry, it’s not too late.

More ways to help your dog become more independent:

    Gradually increase alone time
    Encourage solo play
    Avoid constant attention
    Establish routines
    Teach “place” or “settle” commands
    Reward good behaviour with treats
    Practice makes perfect!
