This four-legged creature originated in the Netherlands, and very few were exported to other countries.     Once used to lure ducks into traps in the Netherlands, the Kooikerhondje remains a working dog today. Outside of the European country, though, this type of pup is known to be a rare dog breed. Their friendliness, agility, and gorgeous coat make them such lovable pets.

    Bred for herding, this rare dog breed from Hungary has a curly coat of fur, a sharp intellect, and an energetic personality. Ever since World War II when their population massively dropped, there’s been a limited number of Mudi dogs—today, there are just a few thousand left.

    Known as the “Tiger Dog,” this pup came from an isolated region in Japan, which contributes to its rarity. Plus, in 1934, it became a “Living Natural Monument,” so ever since then, its export has been limited. Its loyalty, intelligence, and beautiful coat also enhance its exceptionality.

    Finnish Lapphund

    Finnish Lapphund were bred to be reindeer herders in an obscure region outside of Finland. It wasn’t until 2011 that the American Kennel Club recognized the breed, so its presence is rare in America. Their fluffy coats and gentle nature make them super snuggly and great with kids.

    The Chinook is a relatively rare dog breed that was bred in New Hampshire in the early 1900s and was used as an all-purpose sled dog. At one point there were said to be only 28 of these dogs remaining! The Chinook is also the official state dog of New Hampshire.

    Norwegian Lundehund

    These pups were bred to hunt puffins, which is how they got their name. (In Norwegian, “lunde” means puffin, and “hund” means dog.) This breed has some pretty unusual characteristics, including six toes on each foot and one less tooth on each side of its mouth!

    These large scent hounds do just as well on land as they do in water. In fact, they even have webbed feet, a unique trait among hounds. While they were developed to hunt otters, this breed also makes a great family companion.
