As a nation of dog lovers, if you want to discover new places in 2025, there’s no need to leave your four-legged friend at home.
English Heritage has plenty of options for dog-friendly days out. From castles, abbeys and historic gardens, the charity has around 150 dog-friendly sites bringing ‘tails’ of joy!
North
Whitby Abbey – this is a dog walk like no other as you and your pooch take in the wonderful view of the coastline and town while you explore the Abbey’s gothic remains.
Other dog-friendly sites: Aydon Castle, Northumberland; Piel Castle, Cumbria.
South
Tintagel Castle, Cornwall – a firm favourite with canine visitors, not only does the castle offer a lovely walk through the impressive ruins, there is also a secluded beach for picnics and a quick paddle (when the weather is kinder!).
Other dog-friendly sites: Pevensey Castle, East Sussex; Osborne, Isle of Wight.
East
St Augustine’s Abbey, Kent – originally created as a burial place for the Anglo-Saxon kings of Kent, see the tranquil ruins while walking your dog.
Other dog-friendly spots: Tilbury Fort, Essex; Framlingham Castle, Suffolk.
West
Cirencester Amphitheatre – on the outskirts of the Cotswold town, it was built in the early 2nd century. It’s open all-year-round and dogs on leads are welcome.
Other dog-friendly spots: Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire; Ludgershall Castle and Cross, Wiltshire.
