You may notice when you drive by the Ross Corner Animal Wellness Center at 12 Newfield Road in Shapleigh that a new training area has been constructed adjacent to the veterinary office.

This new training area is a dream of veterinarian Dr. Amanda Rizner, who wanted to have her own training area for her dogs, according to her husband, Todd Chrisman.

Dr. Rizner has competed in dog trials for several years and has had to travel long distances for dog training. She started building the training area in the spring of 2016. Although the training area is not open to the public, the center does offer training classes in obedience, nose work, which encourages your dog’s natural ability to hunt and pick up scents, and agility.

There is also a class called “Star Puppy” that offers obedience training for dogs under 12 months of age. This class is American Kennel Club compliant. On completion of the course, the dog receives a medal and a certificate from the AKC. None of the dogs need to be a pedigree to participate, and the class is open to all breeds of dogs.

At the moment, the training course is open for agility practice runs and obedience training, but in the future the center would like to host sanctioned events. The course is large, measuring 100 feet by 100 feet.

Registration forms for all the classes can be requested by emailing info@rosscorner.com or calling 1-844-900-4166.

    LOCAL REFERENDUM RESULTS

A total of 117 voters reported to the polls at the Shapleigh Town Hall during the RSU 57 Budget Validation on Tuesday, June 13. The voters helped approve the school district’s proposed budget, 81-36.

Locally, voters also supported the bond issue on the state ballot with a tally of 61-55, with one voter leaving the question unmarked. All across the state, voters were asked to approve a $50 million bond issue to provide $45 million in funds for “investment in research, development and commercialization in the State to be used for infrastructure, equipment and technology upgrades.” As the question read, approval would “enable organizations to gain and hold market share, to increase revenues and to expand employment or preserve jobs for Maine people, to be awarded through a competitive process to Maine-based public and private entities, leveraging other funds in a one-to-one ratio and $5 million in funds to create jobs and economic growth by lending to or investing in small businesses with the potential for significant growth and strong job creation.”

Lastly, on the Shapleigh ballot, voters approved $34,000 to be shared by the Town of Shapleigh and Acton for a new patrol vehicle for the York County Sheriff Contract Deputy. The proposed appropriation passed, 78-39.

‘COMMUNITY DAYS’ SET FOR JULY 21, 22

The 19th Annual Shapleigh Community Days is scheduled to take place on Friday and Saturday, July 21 and 22.

Festivities will take place at the Shapleigh Commons on Shapleigh Corner Road.

On July 21, the festivities will include a Pasta Fest, sponsored by the Acton-Shapleigh Lions Club, at the First Baptist Church at 600 Shapleigh Corner Road from 4 to 6:30 p.m. A “Concert in the Commons” will be performed that evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and will feature the Cedar Mountain Blue Grass Band. Fireworks will be displayed that night at the old Alpaca farm on Route 11, across from the soccer field, from 8:30 to 9 p.m.

July 22 will be eventful too, with a parade beginning at 9 a.m. at Weavers Field, located at the corner of 21st Street and Shapleigh Corner Road. A classic car show will follow at 10 a.m. Cars from 1970 and earlier are welcome. All entries will receive a participation plaque.

Concession booths will open at the Commons at 8 a.m. on July 22, and the Pie Contest will be judged there at 11:15 a.m.

The Community Days Committee is still looking for vendors and volunteers. If interested in volunteering, or if interested in participating in the car show, please contact Duffy Gold at (702) 523-7053 or 19thannualcommunitydays@gmail.com. If you are interested in being a vendor, please contact Nancy Hodgdon at 636-3411 or njhodgdon@gmail.com.

Applications for vendors can also be obtained on the town’s website, www.Shapleigh.net. Applications must be received by July 15.

    PLEASE SHOW FLAG ETIQUETTE

The Fourth of July is almost here, and it would be prudent to review American Flag Etiquette.

The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or an appropriate light source.

The flag should be flown in fair weather, unless the flag is designed for inclement weather use.

The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal.

The flag should not be used for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for this purpose. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on top.

The flag should never have any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure or drawing of any kind placed on it, or attached to it.

The flag should never be used for receiving, holding, carrying or delivering anything.

When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms.

The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.

When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

For a more comprehensive set of Flag Etiquette, please visit www.usa-flag- site.org/flag-etiquette/ .

    CLOSED FOR THE HOLIDAY

The town clerk’s and code enforcement offices at the Shapleigh Town Hall at 22 Back Road will be closed starting on Saturday, July 1, for the holiday weekend. As well, the Town Office and the transfer station on Route 11 will be closed on Tuesday, July 4, for the same reason.

    ENJOY YOUR SUMMER!

The students and staff at Shapleigh Memorial School had their last day of school on June 23. Students, don’t forget the great summer reading program that Shapleigh Community Library is offering at 607 Shapleigh Corner Road!

Have a safe and happy summer.

    MMM . . . PANCAKES!

The Acton-Shapleigh Lions Club will serve a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, July 1, at the Acton Town Hall at 35 H Road, from 8 to 10 a.m.

The breakfast will include pancakes, sausages, eggs, beans, toast, coffee, tea, orange juice and milk. The cost to eat is $5 per person.
