A recent study has revealed that a shocking 99% of dogs have faecal matter on their paws after traipsing around your home post-walk.

Given this, it’s crucial to clean your dog’s paws after outdoor excursions – not only to prevent health risks posed to family members by your pet’s feet but also to enhance the overall wellbeing of your furry friends. Beyond not wanting your family to inadvertently touch poo brought in from outside, for your dog, dirt and other bacteria accumulating on their paws can lead to irritation and dermatitis.

Veterinarians also recommend owners to be extra diligent with cleaning during the autumn and winter months – as mud and snow can also affect pets’ skin and nails.

Taking to TikTok, vet Pancho Cavero emphasised the importance of caring for your dog’s paws.

He stated: “Paw pads aren’t just soft cushions; they’re essential multifunctional tools for the daily survival of our furry friends. First, they act as shock absorbers, protecting the joints and bones of their paws during jumping and running by absorbing the impact with the ground.

“Additionally, paw pads serve as protection against extreme weather conditions. In summer, they help animals avoid getting burned by hot asphalt, and in winter, they provide insulation against the cold.

“Another essential role is providing traction. The rough texture of the pads enables them to grip the ground more effectively, which is essential for running or climbing safely.”

He added: “And let’s not forget that paw pads contain sweat glands that help animals mark their territory with pheromones. So, as you can see, paw pads are true miracles of nature – designed to protect, insulate, and help our pets on their daily adventures.”

Step-by-step guide to cleaning your dog’s paws

    1. Make sure you have everything you need within reach

You can use a bowl of warm water, clean towels, pet wipes, or a special neutral soap for dogs. Put an absorbent mat by the door, which makes cleaning simpler and stops dirt from being traipsed through the house.

    2. Be ready for your dog to be fidgety or restless

It’s crucial to calm your pet, so talk to them in a soothing voice, stroke them, and help them understand that this is a caring moment. If needed, you can put the dog on a non-slip surface or on your knee, always ensuring they feel secure.

    3. Get rid of surface dirt

You can do this with a damp cloth or special wipes. If the paws are really dirty, soak them in warm water to loosen the muck. This step removes large bits and reduces friction when rubbing, preventing irritation of the pads.

    4. For a more thorough clean, use a neutral or dog-specific soap and warm water

Gently rub each paw, paying particular attention to the pads, the gaps between them, and under the claws – areas where dirt and bacteria tend to build up.

    5. Dry the paws with a clean towel

This will stop your furry friend from running around the house with wet paws, so don’t miss this step!

    6. Do a final check

Use this chance to inspect for any cuts, blisters, or injuries on the paws. If you spot any issues, seek advice from your vet if required.

    7. Reward your dog with a treat

This encourages good behaviour and helps your pet link paw cleaning with something pleasurable.
