It’s been an eventful time at Crufts, which has been taking place at Birmingham’s NEC.

Thousands of dogs entered the contest, which is a great opportunity to take a look at the wide variety of breeds out there. In some cases, spectators would have never heard of the pooches before.

And this is evident by a TikTok video, which shows the different types of dogs that strut their stuff at a previous event. The video, shared by East Sussex raw dog food company Benyfit Natural, amassed 1.9 million views.

Benyfit Natural said: “Our new favourite dog breeds. The best part of Crufts… Discover Dogs.” The company listed dog breeds they didn’t know existed until Crufts, leaving many dog lovers equally surprised. So have you ever heard of these breeds?

    1. Basenji

Pets4Homes describes this breed as loyal, affectionate and great with families. They form a strong bond with one person in their household, love being around other dogs, do not shed a lot and are easy to maintain. Plus, they are pretty independent.

This small but fearless breed, recognised by its fox-like face and prick ears, has a life expectancy of between 13 and 15 years. They are known for being loud and not shy around strangers.

The American Kennel Club states: “This is a vocal breed in Finland, owners hold contests to crown a ‘King Barker’ and true Finn lovers are more delighted than annoyed by their breed’s yodelling and range of vocalisation.”

    3. Barbet

This adorable breed is known for its thick coat of fur and joyful, smart, loving and loyal nature. They make excellent family pets and get along well with other dogs. However, they are known for being stubborn, so they need regular exercise and entertainment.

    4. Kooikerhondji

This Dutch breed was originally used as a working dog. They are intelligent, active and agile, bearing a resemblance to a spaniel and can be easily trained.

The American Kennel Club reports: “The breed is faithful, easy-going and friendly in the home. Outdoors he is a true sporting dog being keen, swift, tough, attentive and energetic. With sufficient perseverance and stamina, he enjoys working and does so with a cheerful character.”

    5. Pekingese

This small and adorable dog hails from China and carries itself with a regal manner. They enjoy being pampered and are known for their distinctive ‘lion’s mane’.

Not only are they loyal and affectionate, but according to the American Kennel Club, “Pekes are charming, confident companions who develop a tight bond with their favorite human,” and were “bred to live in palaces”.

The Xoloitzcuintle, better known as the Mexican hairless dog, gets its name from the dog-headed Aztec god Xolotl, associated with lightning, the underworld, and death. Despite the intimidating association, these dogs are highly intelligent, calm, cheerful, and playful.

    6. Korean Jindo

One of South Korea’s national treasures is the Korean Jindo, named after Jindo Island. As the national breed of Korea, it has a reputation for being excellent at finding things and being a loyal companion.

Once used for hunting, the Jindo is bold yet reserved and sometimes described as a one-person dog due to their devotion to a single human.

    7. Coton de Tulear

The Coton de Tulear is a sweet, fluffy white breed that’s both affectionate and playful. They relish cuddles and strokes and require just 30-40 minutes of exercise daily.

Although rare, this breed has gained popularity among celebrities, with famous owners including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Debra Messing, Barbara Streisand, and Jane Fonda.

    8. Hamiltonstovare

This lively and friendly dog boasts a glossy and beautifully patterned coat. The breed, popular in Sweden, is known for its intelligence and strength.

It’s more suited to experienced owners as it requires good training and vigorous walks. They typically enjoy over two hours of walking per day and need grooming once a week. According to Purina, it makes a fantastic family pet.
