Getting a dog is a huge responsibility, and especially for those of us who work full time, it can seem impossible to be able to fit taking proper care of a pooch into your busy day-to-day life. But not all dog breeds are the same, and while some can require very long daily walks and an established grooming routine, others are fine to chill out most of the time, and can take care of themselves to some degree.
In fact, there are several breeds that are better suited to those with more hectic work or personal lives, and Purina has rounded up a list of six of them, should any busybodies be in the market for a new furry friend. But just because these pups are low-maintenance doesn’t mean they don’t need love, care and attention, so it’s crucial to understand your specific dog’s needs before adopting.
The experts at Purina said: “Low-maintenance dogs come in all shapes and sizes. Although some think that tiny breeds will make a dog owner’s life a bit easier, some of the most undemanding canines are actually on the larger side of dog breeds.

“There is no such thing as a zero-maintenance dog, so expect walking, feeding, grooming and playing to still be part of the routine. But there are a few canines able to match hectic schedules better than the rest.”
From small yappers like the Chihuahua to big family dogs like the Labrador, there’s a easy-going dog out there for everyone. Here are six dog breeds that are low-maintenance for busier pet parents.
6 low-maintenance dog breeds for busy owners
1. Chihuahua
They may be known for being divas, but a Chihuahua is a surprisingly low-effort pooch to look after.
Their smooth coat doesn’t require much attention, and as small dogs, they don’t need to go on a full expedition to meet their daily exercise needs.
2. Dachshund
Another little pooch that doesn’t shed much, the Dachshund is ideal for those with busy routines.
But while they’re simple enough to look after, make sure they aren’t fed too much as this pooch is more prone to obesity than others.
3. Pug
Pugs need minimal grooming and just a half-hour walk a day will keep them happy.
But they do shed, so investing in a good hoover may be a good idea.
4. Greyhound
While known for being athletic, the Greyhound also loves to lounge.
They are quite the gentle giant, and prefer short and fast bursts of exercise before napping the rest of the day to recharge.
5. Labrador retriever
While they can be very high energy and shed a lot, the Lab is an ideal low-maintenance pooch for families, and they are known for having a soft spot for children.
Their easy-going personality is what makes this pooch a walk in the park to look after.
6. Mastiff
While they may look intimidating, the Mastiff is a docile breed that’s eager to please.
They’re easy to train and have a short coat that doesn’t require too much attention.
