Rare Hungarian Dog Officially Becomes the UK’s Newest Breed

The Kennel Club of the United Kingdom has officially recognized the Hungarian Mudi, a rare herding breed, with effect from July 1, 2025, reads the organization’s statement. The breed will be listed in the Pastoral Group under the Imported Breed Register, marking a significant milestone for both the breed and its enthusiasts in the UK.

Until an interim breed standard is established and published by The Kennel Club, the Mudi will not be eligible to compete in breed-specific classes at Kennel Club-licensed shows, they stressed. However, recognition itself is a crucial step forward for the breed’s visibility and preservation.

Though references to Mudi-like dogs can be traced back to the 18th century, the breed was formally identified only in 1936 in Hungary.

Known for its curly coat, erect ears, and keen intelligence, the Mudi has traditionally served as a versatile farm dog — excelling in herding, guarding, and companionship.

Despite its many talents, the Mudi remains relatively unknown outside its native Hungary, making this recognition a notable advancement for the breed in the UK.

Dorit Powell of The Hungarian Mudi Club in the UK describes the breed as “razor-sharp” and “fiercely loyal,” emphasizing its need for mental and physical stimulation.

They are suitable for most types of living, as long as they are provided with a job or similar mental and physical stimulation,”

Powell said. “Their human companions should also be prepared for breed-characteristic vocal and herding behavior,” she added. She also noted that Mudis require minimal grooming, with coats that shed naturally and benefit from occasional brushing. Their love of water helps keep their coat clean and restores its natural curls and waves.

Importantly, Powell reminds prospective owners that the Mudi is still a primitive breed, meaning that they thrive on positive reinforcement, patience, and a strong bond with their handler. She advises thorough research and consultation with reputable breeders to ensure a suitable match.

The addition of the Mudi brings the total number of Kennel Club-recognized pedigree breeds to 225. The last breed to be recognized in the United Kingdom was the Icelandic Sheepdog in April 2025.
