Losing a beloved dog is always heartbreaking, but imagine losing an entire breed forever. Some dog breeds are on the brink of extinction; their numbers are dwindling due to limited breeding, low populations, and lack of awareness. Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good—disappearing from the world like they were never a part of it.

Before that happens, let’s shine a light on these rare and endangered breeds. Appreciate them while you still can!

Ever heard of an Otterhound? Don’t worry, most people haven’t. These web-footed dogs were once prized for otter hunting in England. But with just 800 left worldwide, they’re among the most endangered British breeds.

    Skye Terrier

Skye Terriers have a long body, short legs, and a coat that would make a shampoo commercial jealous. Despite once being a royal favorite, these dogs are teetering on the edge of extinction. Experts fear they could vanish within 40 years if numbers keep dwindling. A breed fit for a queen definitely deserves a comeback.

    Sealyham Terrier

Back in the golden age of cinema, Sealyham Terriers strutted alongside Hollywood’s elite. Today, they’re barely a blip on the canine radar. In 2011, only 63 puppies were registered in the UK. If classic films can get remastered, maybe these charming little dogs deserve a revival, too.

If a breed could win “Best Hairstyle,” the Dandie Dinmont Terrier would take the prize. This small Scottish breed, famous for its fluffy topknot, is in serious decline. Only 102 were born in the UK in 2023.

    Scottish Deerhound

This supersized dog with a rugged, weatherproof coat was once the choice of Scottish nobility. Unfortunately, this majestic breed is slipping away, with only 132 puppies born in 2023—less than half the number in 2017. Their regal days might be numbered.

This is another tough and full-of-character dog that’s fading into obscurity. Those who know these dogs know how tough they can be since they were originally bred for hunting and vermin control. So, if you’re looking for a feisty underdog before they completely disappear, this might be your match.

    Kazakh Tazy

In Kazakhstan, the Tazy has been a hunting companion for centuries. But with fewer than 300 purebred Tazys left, they’re on the brink of extinction. The government is stepping in to save these fast runners from going extinct.

    Xiasi Dog

For generations, the Xiasi Dog was a trusted guardian and hunting partner in China’s Guizhou Province. With time, their numbers dropped and became critically low. If you’ve never heard of them, you’re not alone—and that’s exactly why they’re disappearing.

    Norwegian Lundehund

Dogs usually have four toes per paw, but the Norwegian Lundehund has six. This puffin-hunting breed is ultra-flexible and built for adventure. Unfortunately, genetic bottlenecks and low numbers make them one of the rarest breeds on Earth.

    English Toy Terrier

Once a fashionable companion in Victorian England, the English Toy Terrier is now a breed that’s rarely around. Their sleek, black-and-tan coats remain timeless, but their numbers tell another story. Despite their elegance, they’ve joined the list of vulnerable dog breeds.

    Sussex Spaniel

Sussex Spaniels have rich, golden-liver coats and soulful eyes. These are the real underdogs of the spaniel world. Despite their sweet nature, they’re struggling to stay afloat. The decline in registration numbers clearly suggests that this breed also makes it to the list of vulnerable breeds.

    Smooth Fox Terrier

The Smooth Fox Terrier was once a crowd favorite but is now slipping through the cracks. Their sharp looks and energetic spirit weren’t enough to keep them popular. A massive decline in registrations was noticed, which has put them at risk of extinction.

    Bloodhound

Bloodhounds are kind of like detectives of the dog world, with noses so powerful they can track scents days later. This breed is also facing a decline in registration. Wondering who will solve the mystery of their disappearance?

    Mudi

This is a herding breed from Hungary that deserves more love. They’re smart, agile, and a great companion to keep at your side. But despite their talents, they remain one of the least-known and most endangered breeds. If you want a dog that can do it all, the Mudi is waiting—while they still exist.

    Irish Wolfhound

The Irish Wolfhounds were previously declared vulnerable and close to extinction due to factors like the decline of wolves in Ireland and over-exportation. Surprisingly, they made a remarkable comeback thanks to dedicated breeding efforts. While still relatively rare, maintaining responsible breeding practices is crucial to ensure this tall dog continues to survive.

    Azawakh

The Azawakh comes from West Africa and was bred by nomadic tribes to guard camps and hunt at high speeds. Tall, lean, and intensely loyal, this breed remains rare outside its homeland. Small global breeding pools and limited awareness make long-term survival uncertain without careful preservation.

    Catalburun

The Catalburun is a Turkish hunting dog instantly recognized by its split nose. Known for sharp scenting skills and calm loyalty, this breed is still mostly found in one region of Turkey. Low population numbers, little international recognition, and minimal breeding programs put its future quietly at risk.
