The average UK property has just 2.95 bedrooms so it’s surprising that these residents are giving up an entire one for their pooches
It’s no secret that a dog is a man’s best friend. UK pet owners may go the extra mile to make their homes more pet-friendly – from installing ramps to steering clear of using any cleaning products that may be dangerous to pooches.
Competitions like Crufts, which crowned its 2025 winner last week, showcase dogs in all their glory and may encourage animal lovers to invest in their pet that bit more.
But what about giving your pet their own room? Some people may draw the line at this – while others would welcome the idea with open arms.
It turns out residents in one particular Scottish city are happy to give their four-legged friend their own quarters, according to research from Sell House Fast.
The quick property sales specialist conducted a survey to ask 2,000 UK pet owners how much they would be willing to spend on their homes for their beloved pets.
Interestingly, pet owners in Glasgow rank third in the UK for giving their pet their own bedroom, at a whopping 33 per cent.
Pet owners in Scotland’s biggest city also fare highly for considering purchasing pet friendly flooring (25 per cent), installing bay windows for a pet lookout (18 per cent) and heated floors (five per cent).
This would result in an investment of over £10,000 to pet proof their pads. And the reason people in the Dear Green Place would do this? It’s actually very sweet.
A huge majority – 74 per cent – of Glaswegians believe that their home belongs to their pet as much as it does to them.
In fact, looking at the national picture, the survey showed that 66 per cent of pet parents across the UK agreed that their home belongs to their pet as much as it does to them.
However, people shouldn’t get confused, as not everyone in Glasgow is a pet-lover. Elsewhere in the study, fifteen per cent of Glaswegians agreed that they would be put off buying a home if the previous owner had pets.
Those looking to buy a home would be most put-off if the previous owners owned a dog, with over a fourth (29 per cent) saying they wouldn’t like to buy a home from a dog-owner.
Surprisingly, perhaps, this overtook reptiles and rodents with 23 per cent saying this would be a red-flag when buying a home.
The biggest reason for this was due to potential smells, with 46 per cent of respondents agreeing. This was followed by the fear of potential urine in the carpet, 39 per cent.
The table below outlines the different proposed home modifications and the percentage of Glasgow pet owners who would consider making these changes for their own pet.
