New Wellness Center With Rooftop Pool, Saunas, Planned For Third Street

A New York-based social wellness firm, Bathhouse, has announced plans to build a new three-story facility along North Third Street at 8th Avenue, where there’s currently a fenced-in dog park.

The new North Loop Bathhouse will have hot and cold pools, a salt pool, infrared sauna, Banya and Aufguss saunas, steam rooms, Turkish steam baths, massage and spa services. The rooftop area will include a large open pool area.

In a statement, Bathhouse co-founder Travis Talmadge said, “We are so excited to become a part of the vibrant North Loop… We aim to provide a second-to-none wellness experience at a price point that remains affordable.”

As for the dog park, it’s an amenity that’s essentially been a gift to the neighborhood for many years, graciously offered up for free by property owner Schafer Richardson, with the understanding that the lot would eventually be sold for development. Volunteers with the North Loop Neighborhood Association have been taking care of the dog park’s upkeep for the past several years.

“We received word this past fall that the property had been sold,” said NLNA Vice President David Crary. “Since then, we’ve been actively exploring other alternatives for a new dog park.”
At the moment, it appears the property will still be available to dogs and their owners through the end of January, possibly longer.
Bathhouse, which has two other locations in New York, is working with the new property owner, Swervo, to create its Minneapolis facility.
The current plans show the building with almost no windows on the first level, which is not ordinarily allowed by the city of Minneapolis, but the company is seeking a variance to keep passersby from peeking in.
“The Bathhouse’s intention is to promote a quiet and communal atmosphere, encouraging relaxation and conversation in and around the spa facilities but in a private environment,” they wrote in their application. “Patrons of the facility will be wearing minimal clothing (bathing suits) in keeping with standard bathhouse protocol.”

The company hopes to begin construction in the spring, with an opening projected for mid-2027.
“We are club for all people,” said Talmadge. “Wellness is for everyone. We provide services that go beyond what people think of when they think of pools and saunas. Bathhouse is a place where you will be better off physically, socially, and mentally when you leave.”
