Meet the Rare New Dog Breed Officially Recognized in the U.S.

Whether they’re small and frisky or large and cuddly, dogs run the gamut of shapes, sizes, colors, and personalities. While every type of four-legged companion is unique and endearing, some breeds are more well-known than others. Take, for example, Golden Retrievers (like Alex Drummond’s dog, George!), German Shepherds, or Beagles—chances are, you either own one or know someone who does. But even though these household names get the most acknowledgement and attention, there are other rarer breeds that you’ve probably never heard of before. And that list just keeps expanding!

The American Kennel Club just added another newcomer to its list of recognized dog breeds, and it’s pretty uncommon in the United States. (There are just 400 of them!) The new addition in question is the Danish-Swedish Farmdog, otherwise known as DSF.

According to the AKC’s website, the Danish-Swedish Farmdog—which is number 202 of AKC-recognized dog breeds—is a hardworking and independent yet playful breed that looks similar to a Jack Russell Terrier. “Danish-Swedish Farmdogs are small, compact dogs with a big attitude and a passion for a job and a challenge,” the AKC says. “A dedicated and hardy working breed, Farmdogs are far from needy, capable of entertaining themselves, and, like a cat, will lie on their back and play with a ball. These dogs are ready to accompany their owners to any activity.”

Even though the AKC just recognized this new dog breed, Danish-Swedish Farmdogs have been around for centuries—precisely, since the ancient Vikings. (Skeletons similar to these dogs were found in Viking burial sites from 1200 years ago!) Throughout their enduring history, they’ve done it all: circus performers, vermin catchers, dock divers—you name it. While the United States has yet to catch on, they’re extremely popular in European countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands.

If you want to see the Danish-Swedish Farmdog in action, this dog breed is making its debut in the Working Group category at the National Dog Show on Thanksgiving!
