SPCA shelter dogs only have short stretch on Heritage Way for their leashed exercise
Dear Castlegar dog lovers,
I’m so glad to live in a town where dogs are cherished. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a joyful pupper trotting along outdoors.
My love for animals, and dogs especially, is what motivates me to volunteer at the BC SPCA. Some may not know, we have our own regional centre and animal shelter serving Castlegar over by the airport on Heritage Way, at the end of the road past the Doukhobour Museum and Kootenay Gallery.
I’m one of several volunteers that aims to bring shelter dogs out for fresh air and socialization on Heritage Way and the adjacent river view trail.
However, when other dog guardians drive their dogs up to Heritage Way, and let them jump out of vehicles to explore unleashed, it unfortunately often cuts walks short for these shelter dogs who so desperately need them. When an unknown dog is running loose, or barking or lunging on or off leash, volunteers need to ensure the safety of the dog in our care and that often means shortening our walk and turning back.
Dog guardians are, of course, welcome to take their dogs walking wherever they like for exercise. SPCA shelter dogs, unfortunately, don’t have that freedom, and typically only have that one short stretch on Heritage Way for their leashed exercise.
I ask as a fellow dog lover, please keep your dogs leashed and under control so Heritage Way is safe and accessible for our SPCA dogs. They deserve all the love and support and they can get from our community. Thank you.
