As the season changes, immunity fluctuates, making both humans and animals susceptible to illness. However, unlike humans, dogs do not have a specific flu season and can catch the virus year-round. This makes it crucial for pet owners to recognise early signs of canine flu.
Veterinarian J S Rama Krishna said, “Common signs of canine flu include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, fever, lethargy, and reduced appetite. In some cases, dogs may experience eye discharge or difficulty breathing. These symptoms can resemble other respiratory conditions, so monitoring your dog closely is essential if they appear unwell.”
While there is no need to panic, veterinary attention is essential if symptoms persist beyond 24 to 48 hours, worsen, or include severe coughing, breathing difficulties, or refusal to eat or drink.
“Minor illnesses usually improve with rest and hydration, but if symptoms persist, worsen, or include high fever, severe lethargy, or loss of appetite, it could indicate a serious illness,” said Krishna, adding, “Early intervention can prevent complications like pneumonia and ensure prompt care.”

How to prevent canine flu
Pet owners can take preventive measures to protect their dogs from infection. Maintaining good hygiene, avoiding contact with sick dogs, and ensuring a balanced diet with regular exercise can help strengthen immunity.
“Boost their immunity through regular checkups and vaccinations. Limit exposure in crowded areas, especially during flu outbreaks, to reduce risk,” said Krishna.
The role of vaccination

Vaccination plays a key role in controlling the spread of canine flu. “Vaccines are available for certain strains, such as H3N8 and H3N2. Consult your veterinarian to determine if vaccination is necessary based on your dog’s lifestyle and exposure risk. It is especially helpful in high-risk or communal environments,” said Krishna.
According to him, it is important to keep your pet cosy, ensuring their living area is draft-free. “Avoid crowded spaces with other dogs, monitor for early flu symptoms, and conduct regular veterinary checkups and flu vaccinations whenever necessary,” said Krishna.
