The Indus Waters Treaty remains suspended, sources say
The Induswaters Treaty between India and Pakistan remains suspended, four government sources told Reuters. This is despite the countries reached a ceasefire agreement on Saturday, days after the deadly battle.
The 1960 treaty regulates the sharing of water from tributaries between the Indus River and South Asian countries. India pulled it out last month after a fatal attack on tourists in Kashmir.
They cited national security concerns. The Indus Basin supplies around 80% of Pakistan’s irrigated agriculture.
India does not have the power to restrict water in Pakistan, but it can choose to ignore the limitations of silt irradiation and release sediment into the water.
