How to adopt the best dog for your lifestyle – NBC Los Angeles

Just in time for National Mutt Day, dog lovers are encouraged to choose adoption when looking to bring home a new furry friend.

Best Friends Animal Society, an animal advocacy group, is currently looking to find homes for 44 dogs at its West Los Angeles location. The organization took in 430 dogs from January to March this year, according to the nonprofit’s data.

For those looking to bring a pup into a family home, it is best to choose a dog who is confident in a high energy environment.

Families should look for dogs that can feel comfortable in a household with children and noise, the nonprofit said.

Although smaller dogs may be the perfect fit for smaller living spaces, Best Friends reminds those looking for pets to not rule out a larger dog if their exercise needs can be met.

It is also helpful to consider lifestyle when looking for a perfect match. If looking for an adventure buddy, potential owners should consider a dog who wants lots of exercise. Adult or older dogs can be a fit for those with a less active lifestyle.

If a homeowner is unsure about a dog being the right fit, foster-to-adopt programs provide prospective adopters with information about how the pet behaves. Orange County Animal Care, Pasadena Humane Society and Inland Valley Humane Society currently offer foster-to-adopt programs.

Those interested in taking a step towards longer-term fostering or adoption can also spend a day with an adoptable dog through Best Friends Los Angeles’ Adventure Buddy program.

A complete list of adoptable dogs and cats at Best Friends can be found on its website.

In June, Los Angeles Animal Services’ shelters took in 1,628 dogs, the department reported. So far this year, about 9,911 dogs have been taken into its shelter.
