Dog owners in Brooklyn are on edge over a pair of violent pit bulls that they say are responsible for three attacks on other dogs in the community.
One of the attacks resulted in the death of a dog and now there are calls for the pit bulls’ owner to be held responsible.
Diane Bradley said she screamed and huddled in her building on Sunday to protect her 3-year-old dog Calypso. She said Calypso had been in the mouth of one of the pit bulls.
“Out of nowhere two pit bulls grabbed Calypso in the foyer. I saw the owners jump on the dog that had Calypso’s head in the jaws of the dog,'” Bradley said.
Bradley says her vet bill is $2,300 and for the past year, the same two pit bulls have killed one dog named Denim, mauled Milo in May and then most recently attacked Calypso on Sunday.
Calypso is now covered with bites, had to have stitches, her left eye is swollen and cut, and her left shoulder was dislocated.
Denim’s owner Latoya Nunn said her dog was killed by the same two pit bulls.
“And these dogs came out of nowhere unleashed and attacked my dog,” Nunn said. “She didn’t do anything to cause them to come to her. They caught her off guard, both of us. One had her in their mouth, and the other was biting from the back and she died,” Nunn said.
Milo’s owner, Leshia Palmer, says her vet bill in May was $2,000.
“He was bit four times, the worst one was on his neck. He had to be on heavy medications,” Palmer said.
Witnesses say there is video after the weekend attack on Calypso that shows the owner of the dogs punching his own animals after the attack.
“He’s abusive, these dogs need to come out of his possession, I feel sorry for the dogs,” Nunn said.
The building management company, ELH Management, sent the following statement about their tenant, the man with the pit bulls, to Eyewitness News:
“The safety and well-being of our residents and their pets are our top priorities. We have initiated legal proceeding against the tenant and are taking this matter very seriously.”
The dog owners want their thousands of dollars in vet bills reimbursed and they want the dog owner and the pit bulls gone -they don’t want any children or other pets hurt.
