The dog days of summer may be over, but for one day this weekend four-legged friends can take a leisurely swim or relax poolside at the Wellness &Aquatics Complex in Columbia.
Saturday’s scheduled Doggie Dive — a community pool party for dogs and owners — marks the final swim of the season before workers drain and clean the outdoor pools for the winter break.
The $10 fee for each dog benefits Russell Rescue Inc., a national network of volunteers who help find homes for unwanted, displaced or abandoned Jack Russell dogs.
Saturday’s schedule begins with swimming from 10-11:30 a.m. for dogs weighing 25 pounds or less; an all-dog swim from noon until 1:30 p.m.; and a 2-3:30 session for dogs weighing more than 25 pounds.
The event also featured local vendors selling items Halloween costumes for pets and pet-care products. For $15, owners can have their pet implanted with a microchip for identification or for a $5 fee, have their dog’s nails trimmed. Participants also will be eligible for door prizes.
The complex is located at 1446 Oak Spring Drive in Columbia. Dog owners must show proof of rabies vaccination for their pet to participate.
