The Harrier dog breed is so rare in the United States that fewer than 500 are believed to exist here, which means most people have never seen one in real life. At first glance, they look like giant Beagles, same soulful eyes, same tricolor markings—just stretched vertically and upgraded to “athletic hound mode.”Because the Harrier is considered a vulnerable or endangered breed in some circles, dog shows often spotlight them to help preserve awareness. These are not trendy designer dogs. They’re historic hunting hounds with deep roots and surprisingly chill house manners.TikToker @mas.tiffany.heights shared a clip from the Linn County…
The craggy, beautiful Isle of Skye, off the northwest coast of Scotland, gave rise more than 400 years ago to the rugged yet elegant terrier that bears its name. With a form that has remained essentially unchanged over the centuries, the Skye Terrier today is still the good-natured, loyal, fearless companion that ferreted vermin out of the rocks and lairs of its island home and charmed the English nobility of the 19th century as a fashionable pet. English artist Alexander Davis Cooper has shown two Skye Terriers, silhouetted by a wonderfully atmospheric landscape, in the painting, On the Isle of…
Members of the greyhound industry are asking a federal judge to strike down a recently passed state constitutional amendment that essentially bans greyhound racing in Florida, saying in part it “forever depriv(es) them of making a living.” The Support Working Animals organization and eight other plaintiffs on Friday sued Gov. Ron DeSantis, Secretary of State Laurel Lee, and Attorney General Ashley Moody in South Florida federal court over Amendment 13. The three defendants are “charged with enforcing the Constitution and laws,” the suit says. Amendment 13 passed with 69 percent ‘yes’ votes in November, specifically outlawing the placing of bets…
A dog owner has taken to Reddit to ask why their pooch always greets them with a toy in his mouth when they come home – and other users were quick to explain whyDoes your dog greet you with a toy? (stock photo)(Image: alexei_tm / Getty Images)Coming home to a wagging tail is the best feeling, but some dog owners are left scratching their heads when their pooch greets them with a toy or slipper instead of a sniff.A puzzled Reddit user queried: “When I (or my wife) come home our dog always grabs a toy out of his toy…
The history of using canines for police and military work goes back to the Romans using Neapolitan Mastiffs on the battlefield as “dogs of war.” However, police dogs are now an integral part of law enforcement, taking on the duties that they outperform humans in. Canines originally became our guardians and livestock herders through the ages. But when required, they acted as police dogs to ensure law and order while assisting in apprehending those lawbreakers. The term “K-9” is a homophone for the word “canine.” Its first formal but unofficial use was during World War II. Its popularity undoubtedly rose…
Visiting different states within America can sometimes feel like traveling to a completely different country, given the significant cultural differences and accents. Visiting parts of Louisiana may make you feel like you require a translator to navigate your vacation, as people often speak Creole or Cajun—both of which have very thick, unique accents. Southern Mississippi also has a mishmash of accents that range from Cajun to a non-distinct regional accent. But one thing North Carolina has in common with states like Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana is that they all have a range of southern colloquialisms that translate fine between southern…
Imagine walking down the street and a stranger screaming at your dog, “damn, where you get that ass?” or “I just want to eat you up.” Sounds absurd, right? Well, that kind of street harassment has become the norm for many women, including Elizabeth Hayes, creative director at D.C.-based Miau Miaou. A victim of what 57 percent of women across the country have experienced, Hayes admits that she is actually guilty of catcalling—but in a slightly different way. In Doggie Harassment, a video released yesterday that’s both amusing and sobering, Hayes produces a series of skits showing women saying things…
When the stay-at-home orders began in mid-March, many Americans made beelines for their local animal shelters to either foster or adopt adorable dogs. All over the country, shelters normally faced with the terrible task of euthanizing unwanted animals because their kennels were overflowing were able to happily report that their cages were nearly bare. Dog trainer-to-the stars and animal behaviorist César Millán — you know him as the “Dog Whisperer” — has no doubt that the dogs were fostered or adopted into loving homes. His question is whether these new pet parents are committed to the long-term task of caring for…
Remember when you bought something, you owned it and, for the most part, only paid once? These days, companies try to extract the most value from their customers by getting them to pay more by tacking on surprise fees or add-ons that function as a subscription.Remember when you bought software once and, if you wanted to upgrade to the latest version, you paid extra? But if you liked the old version, you kept it and it worked fine? These days, you’re forced to pay a monthly fee to use the software and are forced to pay for the upgrades whether…
AKC now recognizes 205 dog breeds with the addition of three new breeds. There is a long process required for a breed to receive AKC recognition.
