When you think about who might benefit from a service dog, you might first think of a person who is visually impaired. That may be how the concept began, but today service dogs help children with all kinds of special needs, from autism to heart conditions and ADHD. Photo credit: Brown Family It was July 2012. Erica Brown, her husband, Shannon, and their daughter, Claira, who has autism, were at an outdoor concert when a friend spotted Erica through the crowd and called to her. In the moment it took Brown to wave to her friend and turn back, Claira…
If you were a pet living rent-free with your owners, you’d be floating free of concern, too. Some people would even agree that they work 9-5 to give their four-legged companions the best life they deserve. However, a viral Instagram video showed that this dog mom, Jennifer Berger, refused to give her British Bulldog, Eggnog, a free pass on her sister’s vet bill. In fact, Berge confronted her 8-year-old pooch, who was resting on the couch, watching her favorite show, in comfy PJs while munching on her favorite snack. However, it’s her response that will leave you gasping for air.Owner…
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador recognizes the Newfoundland dog and the Labrador Retriever as originating in Newfoundland and Labrador, and as an essential part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s historical and cultural heritage. Both the Newfoundland dog and Labrador Retriever have existed in this province for many years. The Maritime Archaic had dogs as discovered in graves at Port au Choix by Professor James Tuck and carbon dated around four thousand years ago. The first mention of dogs to the province in historical documents is known as early as 1620. Newfoundland dogs are considered the best for their water rescuing…
It may not come as a surprise to read that dogs with beards are filled to the brim with pizzazz and personality. However, it’s important to remember that these brilliantly bearded breeds will often require a tad more grooming than other, beardless dogs who have less defining facial features to maintain. However, before we move on to our top dogs with beards, did you know that many bearded dogs were originally bred to be used as hunting dogs? Trained to catch small prey such as mice, rodents, and burrowing animals, it is said that their beards helped to protect them from any…

Sit, stay… live longer? Research shows that owning a dog can help humans live longer, healthier lives. Now, a US biotech company wants to return the favor with anti-aging drugs designed to extend the lifespan of your canine companion. “The longevity space is crowded right now, and for good reason,” Celine Halioua, founder and CEO of Loyal, told The Post. “We all want to figure out how to get more happy, healthy years for our loved ones —especially the furry ones.” Celine Halioua is leading the push to develop drugs that extend the lives of dogs. Jambo, pet buddies! That, in case you were wondering, is Swahili for “Hi!” And if you’re still wondering what that has to do with the price of dog biscuits, let me tell you about my interview last week. My assistant said I’d be traveling to Roseland to meet a pet with my same coloring – black and white. So I’m thinking maybe another (fabulous) spaniel. Odd name for a dog, though, I thought, when my assistant said “Zebra.” But humans are notorious for naming their pets the most absurd, goofy names so … Anyway, I get there and the human…
I own a vulnerable dog breed, the Norwich Terrier (Image: Sophie Law)Walking through my busy local park, I’ve lost count of the number of times people have stopped to ask about my dog. “Is she a Cairn mix?” “A chubby Yorkshire Terrier?” No one ever guesses correctly. My two-year-old Norwich Terrier, Ginny, is a living relic – one of just 140 born in the UK last year. My short and stout wiry-haired terrier is one of 37 endangered breeds in the UK at risk of disappearing from streets and parks forever. Norwich Terriers are among the country’s rarest dogs, classified as…
There are 250,000 stray dogs in Puerto Rico. Many of these dogs have been dumped at Dead Dog Beach, an isolated area located on the South-East coast. Locals call the strays ‘satos,’ and view them as a nuisance. Sadly, the dogs here live out their short lives filled with neglect and abuse. Photographer Sophie Gamand has travelled to Dead Dog Beach multiple times over a year and a half with Chrissy Beckles, founder of The Sato Project, an organization that provides food, fresh water, vet care and seeks to find new homes for these animals in New York. Gamand documents…
