It turns out there’s room for another dog sled race in the U.P.The inaugural Hiawatha Heritage Dog Sled Race was held this month in Engadine in the eastern U.P. The two-day event was sponsored by the Hiawatha Sportsman’s Club and the HSC Foundation Inc. Initial plans called for a 100-mile overnight endurance challenge, but the lack of adequate snow deterred that course. Instead, a 30-mile mushers’ derby was held Saturday and a second 30-mile mushers’ derby followed the next day. Mushers came from all over Michigan and Wisconsin. “It was a wonderful, wonderful event,” said Bruce Fondren, chair of the event and…

Santa Cruz, CA CNN  —  Melissa Wolf’s clients come in all shapes and sizes. Some have two legs, some have four. All of them need a second chance. Wolf is the founder of UnChained, a nonprofit in northern California that pairs vulnerable young people, often living in juvenile correction facilities, with abandoned or abused dogs that have been rescued from shelters. The youth learn to train the dogs in basic skills and better prepare them for adoption. The program’s goal is twofold: decrease juvenile recidivism and save animals’ lives. “There’s a lot of reciprocity between dogs and humans,” Wolf said.…

Chow chowThe fluffy cuddlebug Chow Chow is one of the rare breeds of dog in the world. Originally found in China, the Chow Chow is now, although rarely, but seen in many other parts of the world. While a pup may cost around Rs 9 lakhs (approx.) approximately, the actual finances of keeping a Chow Chow are way higher when the maintenance cost is added to it. However, anyone wanting to take in a Chow Chow must be…
