America’s Most Popular Dog of 2025 Is Up for Debate

With their unwavering companionship, unconditional love, and unfailing emotional support, dogs are some of the most popular pets in America. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that every type of pooch, no matter the breed, is simply adorable! Although dogs are a favorite four-legged family member in the United States, some kinds of canines are more commonly found in American households than others. There are rare hounds you’ve probably never heard of before like the Azawakh or the Kooikerhondje, and even brand-new breeds, like the Danish-Swedish Farmdog, that the American Kennel Club has recently recognized in the country. But there are a few trusty types of pups, such as Chihuahuas and German Shepherds, that Americans bring home time and time again.

For 2025, however, the breed in first place is up for debate. There are two different types of dogs competing for this year’s title as the most popular in the United States: the Labrador Retriever and the French Bulldog. The annual report from U.S. News & World Report found that labs (of all colors) are America’s top dog, whereas the AKC released statistics claiming that the Frenchie is the clear winner.

While both canines are undoubtedly beloved in America, a difference in methodologies is what accounts for the conflicting rankings. U.S. News & World Report compiled and analyzed over 1 million data points (like dog breeds and dog owners’ zip codes and residences) from pet insurance company Fletch from January 2022 to July 2025, whereas the AKC discovered its gold medalist based on AKC registration statistics from 2024.

Regardless of the exact rankings, both sources agree that Labrador Retrievers and French Bulldogs are widely loved across the nation. U.S. News & World Report discovered that while labs were the victor in 17 states, French Bulldogs were in the running for six states. In its 2024 report, French Bulldogs earned the award for the second most popular breed. Meanwhile, the AKC noted that the Labrador Retriever had a 31-year run as the favorite breed, and for the past three years, labs have secured the second spot on the list.

We don’t know when the debate will settle (if ever), but one thing’s for certain: both breeds are so lovable in their own unique way. Labs are friendly, energetic, and smart companions that come in a range of gorgeous colors like black, chocolate, and yellow, and French Bulldogs are tiny toy dogs with a muscular build that are known for being affectionate, playful, and loyal. Since both breeds are outgoing and social, they get along really well with kids—which is why they make such great family pets!

At the end of the day, the right pet for you is really a matter of personal preference, but we can’t argue that these two dog breeds are certainly special!
