Amazingly Rare Dog Breed Only Has About 11 Pups in the U.S. and the Reason Is Fascinating

As heartbreaking as the number of dogs and puppies waiting for forever homes in shelters is, there is a place in the world for ethical breeding of dogs to keep certain breeds from facing extinction. The people who breed, raise, and find forever homes for these special breeds care deeply about the health, happiness, and well-being of the dogs and enjoy teaching people the pros and cons of welcoming a specific breed into your family.

All though not a breeder but an expert on her chosen breed, the Finnish Lapphund, a TikTok user posted a fascinating video about why people may not want to acquire one. The reasons to obtain one of these amazing dogs is just as important as the reasons why someone may not want to.

Better Pet explains this breed and says, “Finnish Lapphunds are a rare breed in the United States. It’s estimated there are only about 11 in the country now. Most Finnish Lapphunds are found in the Arctic Circle.”

In the above video posted by the TikTok account for @Ourseattletails, the video creator and Finnish Lapphund mom explains, “They were bred to hunt reindeer and are a very vocal breed with a very high-pitched bark. ” She then goes on to say, “The love being outside, especially when it’s cold out, so much so that my Lapphund refuses to come inside when it’s night-time or snowing.”

She then explains that Lapphunds need a job to do since they were bred to be working dogs. They can get destructive if you leave them with nothing to do.

She also said they are velcro dogs and will follow you everywhere, and that just sounds like a pro to me!

They aren’t just a rare breed in America, because a Finnish Lapphund website in the UK explains, “Finnish Lapphunds are still a relatively rare breed in the UK (at time of writing just over 1200 puppies have been born since 1992 – 2020)
