It is always best for new pet owners to perform thorough research before adopting a dog breed.

Considering that the American Kennel Club currently recognises 200 breeds, choosing the right dog breed for your home can be difficult if you have never owned a dog before. However, many experts advise new dog owners to avoid choosing specific breeds. While some dogs need a lot of grooming, some need more activity and instruction. The typical pet owner may lack the time necessary to exercise, teach, and groom their dog. Therefore, read this piece to avoid specific breeds if you want a relaxed dog.

Steve, the head dog trainer of Cainark Dog Training, recently shared his professional opinions on TikTok to assist new pet parents in selecting the ideal dog for themselves. Here are the three dog breeds that Steve, a specialist in high reactivity and behavioural difficulties in dogs, advises first-time dog parents NOT to get.

    Patterdale Terrier

According to Steve, first-time dog owners should never get a Patterdale Terrier. For those who are unfamiliar, Patterdale Terriers are small canines that were once bred for farm work and hunting in Northern England. Their high energy levels, intense prey drive, and independent attitude make them often unsuitable for first-time dog owners. Patterdale Terriers are perfect for persons with an active lifestyle and a history of dog ownership.

They can be difficult to handle for people who are new to dog ownership because of their demand for a lot of exercise and possible sensitivity towards other animals. “Oh my God, the prey drive in those guys is unreal,” Steve remarked, highlighting the reason this breed is not the best choice for people who are new to owning dogs.

    German Shepherd

German Shepherds are a very clever, devoted, and active breed of dog, and are generally not advised for beginner or inexperienced pet owners because of their high energy levels. They are typically hired for police jobs because of their excellent work ethic and great trainability. They require practice, mental stimulation, and frequent exercise to remain content and healthy.

Their unique requirements make them a difficult breed for people who are new to dog ownership, although they may be fantastic companions for the correct owner. “I love them to bits but oh my God they are hard work,” Steve said, referring to German Shepherds not being a good option for first-time dog owners.

    Belgian Malinois

According to Steve, Belgian Malinoiss are the third breed of dog that new owners should stay away from. He humorously remarked that Belgian Malinoiss are like “German Shepherds on acid.” Belgian Malinoiss are also energetic, fiercely protective dogs that are typically bred for law enforcement. They need to be handled by professionals, trained regularly, and given a lot of exercise and socialisation time.

Belgian Malinois, therefore, need particular things to stay active and healthy, such as food, mental stimulation, and exercise, and are not advised for novice or inexperienced dog owners.
