Dr. Erin Ray of Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine warns that while pets can be great company, water settings pose real risks, especially when temperatures soar or lakes contain harmful bacteria like blue-green algae, which can’t be spotted with the naked eye but may cause liver or neurological damage. Basic supplies such as a life jacket, shade, clean drinking water, and familiar comfort items are essential for a safe trip.

Holiday activities, including fireworks and barbecues, add another layer of risk for pets.

Dr. Ray emphasizes the importance of early planning, like choosing secluded areas during firework displays or speaking to your vet about anxiety medication. Recognizing signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, seizures, or blue gums, is also critical.
