A vet has issued a warning to dog owners that if your furry friend has diarrhoea, not to follow outdated advice – a vital mistake she says some are still making. Taking to TikTok, Jade the veterinarian aka @jade.the.vet.nurs, warned it all has to do with what you feed your dog, or in this case, do not feed your dog.

She warned: “Don’t starve your dog if they get diarrhoea” urging owners to instead do three things. She asks people to:

Ensure your pet has access to fresh water daily as having diarrhoea can make them dehydratedDo not starve them as your pets need to eat little and often- she suggests feeding them a bland diet of chicken or white fish with brown rice or wholemeal pasta and breaking this up into 4-6 small meals rather than 2 or 3 bigger mealsPick them up some pro-biotic paste from the vets or at the pet store for three days in a row to restore the balance of biome in their guts”

In any case that you are worried, she urges people to always check with your vets to be safe rather than sorry. Talking about the “outdated advice” when it comes to starving dogs with an upset tummy, she explained it all dates back to when ‘you used to be advised to starve them for 12-24 hours and then put them on some chicken and rice afterwards’.

“However this is not current, up-to-date advice anymore but I still see and hear of so many owners that starve their pets – cats and dogs – if they get diarrhoea,” she said.Explaining that not all dogs with acute diarrhoea need veterinary treatment, she said: “It’s important to know when to visit the vet if your dog has diarrhoea in certain situations.”She noted that you should ‘always seek veterinary advice’ if your dog has any of the following: If your dog has diarrhoea accompanied by vomiting If your dog has severe diarrhoea with blood in the stools If your dog has diarrhoea and is very lethargic or unwell in themselves If your dog has diarrhoea and is inappetent If your dog has diarrhoea after eaten something toxic If your dog still has diarrhoea after 48-72 hours of actively treating the diarrhoea
