    Key Takeaways

Pit bulls are not a specific breed but an umbrella term for several breeds often referred to as “bully breeds.”
While pit bull-type dogs have an unfair reputation for aggression, they are typically loyal and affectionate with proper training and socialization.
Each pit bull breed American Bulldog, American Bully, American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier has unique characteristics and needs.

A pit bull breed isn’t a specific, singular breed, as “pit bull” is an umbrella term that’s used for several breeds often referred to as “bully breeds.” This is no reflection on their temperaments, however. Bully breeds are generally playful and affectionate dogs when raised properly.

Pit bull-type dogs often face unfair discrimination. Bred for their muscular build, they’ve unfortunately been used in cruel dogfighting sports, giving them an inaccurate reputation for aggression. In reality, pit bull-type dogs are usually loving, loyal, and gentle with family members. They are often playful and eager to please.

Here are five breeds commonly referred to as pit bull types.

    Tip

Due to the stigma surrounding these breeds, some areas have banned pit bull-type dog ownership. Check local legislation before bringing one home.

    Breed Characteristics

Pit bull-type dogs typically have muscular, stocky builds with deep chests and large, square heads. Known for their determination, they excel at tasks, whether learning a new trick or digging a hole. They usually love people, including strangers, and crave attention.

Training and socialization from a young age are crucial. Without it, their size and strength can be challenging, as they might pull hard on a leash or jump up on people to greet them.
