GREENVILLE – Comfort isn’t always easy to find in an airport concourse, but a new group of workers at Appleton International are changing that.

Airport staff members have come to notice that a little furry friendship can go a long way.

The Fox Valley Humane Association is partnering with Appleton International Airport to provide therapy dogs as a courtesy to travelers. The program began last month.

Deb Lewis, executive director of the humane association, said they’ve already heard many stories of how the dogs created better flying experiences.

“I had no idea of how many people are frightened by flying,” Lewis said. “They talk to the dogs, but also with the handlers. It takes their mind off their fear and brings down their stress level.”

The humane association has more than 60 therapy dogs at work in the community. Their owners are volunteers. The association provides training — to both the dog and handler — before they’re put to work to provide comfort and companionship throughout the community. Their assignments include the Center for Grieving Children, hospice care and childhood reading programs.

Pat Tracey, marketing manager at the airport, said staff members were interested in the opportunity as an innovative way to improve customer experiences.

He said he didn’t expect just how much the airport community would gain. It’s brought enjoyment to airport and airline workers, as well as to travelers. The dogs have started conversations in a place where people often keep to themselves.

“They’re changing the dynamic of the airport,” Tracey said.

The humane association has five teams in rotation at the airport who provide canine comfort four days a week.

“It’s wonderful to see the difference it’s making,” Lewis said. “We’re thrilled.”
