Super-Rare Harrier Dog Breed Has Under 500 in the U.S.—and Looks Like a Giant Beagle

The Harrier dog breed is so rare in the United States that fewer than 500 are believed to exist here, which means most people have never seen one in real life. At first glance, they look like giant Beagles, same soulful eyes, same tricolor markings—just stretched vertically and upgraded to “athletic hound mode.”

Because the Harrier is considered a vulnerable or endangered breed in some circles, dog shows often spotlight them to help preserve awareness. These are not trendy designer dogs. They’re historic hunting hounds with deep roots and surprisingly chill house manners.

TikToker @mas.tiffany.heights shared a clip from the Linn County Kennel Club dog show in Albany, Oregon, where the interviewer highlighted lesser-known breeds. The Harrier’s dog mom explained she’s been involved with the breed for about 12 years after first helping a friend show them. What drew her in? They’re fun, they’re energetic, and they’re deeply underrated.

One of the biggest misconceptions, she explained, is that Harriers are strictly “pack dogs” that need kennels or large hunting groups. While they were bred for pack hunting, they bond strongly with their people and can absolutely thrive as family companions. According to her, they’ll run and play outside—then come inside and become total couch potatoes. Sign me up for that!

Her favorite thing about the breed? “They’re highly smoochable.” Which is not scientific but is extremely convincing. Looking at her pupper, I can see how that’s pretty accurate.

Commenters were fascinated. Some called them one of the top endangered breeds. Others said they “look like giant Beagles,” and honestly, that’s the gateway description. But once you learn about them, they’re much more than that.

    All About Harriers

Despite sometimes being confused with Terriers, Harriers are actually scent hounds, closely related to Beagles and English Foxhounds. They were originally bred in England to hunt hare (which is where the name “Harrier” comes from).

Harriers are medium-sized, athletic dogs known for stamina, friendliness, and strong noses. They’re social, affectionate, and do well in active homes where they can get regular exercise. With proper training and engagement, they can make wonderful family dogs, especially for people who love Hounds but want something less common.

They may be rare, but based on that face alone, it’s easy to see why dedicated enthusiasts are working to preserve them.
