Australia’s favourite pet name for 2025 is the same for both cats and dogs. Cat and dog people have been pitted against each other in a rivalry for which is the greatest pet for years.
But it seems they have more in common people might think. Compare the Market told Yahoo Lifestyle the most popular name for both types of animals this year was Luna.
Again.
This is the third year running the name has been voted most popular.

Compare’s pet insurance experts said they trawled tens of thousands of quotes from Aussie owners to confirm Luna had remained “Australia’s favourite pet moniker”.
“Some trends were breed specific – with Winnie winning the hearts of Cocker Spaniel owners,” a spokesperson told Yahoo Lifestyle.
“Blue and Bluey were popular picks for Blue Healers.”

“Meanwhile cat owners were purring over Simba and Loki – names from popular Disney and Marvel franchises.”
There were a few double ups, with Coco and Milo also being featured in both lists.

The comparison website’s latest pet survey of 1,004 Australian owners found they were spending about $1,400 feeding, grooming, and medicating their pets each year.
“As these dignified names show, Australians see pets as part of the family and we’re willing to spend big bucks giving them a good life,” Compare the Market’s Chris Ford said.

Earlier this year, Pet Insurance Australia revealed Australia’s favourite breeds.
The cross-bred cavoodle claimed the number one spot.
It was followed by French Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers, Border Collies and Groodles.
Pet Insurance spokesperson Nadia Crighton told Yahoo Lifestyle it was “fascinating” to see how breed popularity had “shifted”.

“Back in 2019, we saw breeds like the Maltese Cross, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and Kelpie Cross ranking among Australia’s favourites,” she said.
“However, in the latest data, these breeds have dropped off the top list, making way for new favourites such as the French Bulldog, Miniature Dachshund, and Labradoodle.
“This shift highlights changing lifestyle preferences, with more Australians opting for companion breeds that thrive in smaller living spaces and suit modern family dynamics.”
