‘Good Boy’ Star Makes Movie History With Astra Film Awards Nomination

Good Boy puts its protagonist front and center, with Indy the dog leading the unique horror movie. The film tells the story of a beloved canine companion who fights against supernatural forces to save his owner when the two move to a rural family home. The trailer for Good Boy went viral earlier this year, when online searches spiked among people curious about whether Indy survives the terrifying ordeal, which also resulted in the movie getting an expanded theatrical release.

Indy’s performance in Good Boy has been hailed by critics and audiences, with many arguing for the canine actor to be the first to earn an Academy Award nomination. While an Oscar remains to be seen, Indy has now officially been nominated for Best Performance in a Horror or Thriller at the Astra Film Awards. The Good Boy star’s nomination makes cinema history, as Indy is now the first animal actor to be nominated for a major acting award that has previously recognized only human talent. The awards ceremony is planned for January 9, when fans of the canine actor will see if his stellar performance wins.

Animal actors have received recognition in the past, with even prestigious festivals acknowledging their work. The Cannes Film Festival presents the Palm Dog Award, which recently went to Messi, the memorable border collie from Anatomy of a Fall, and the American Humane Society regularly recognizes animals through its PATSY Awards. However, Indy is breaking barriers for animal actors, showing that audiences and film awards can appreciate the effort it takes to deliver a finished performance.

Indy’s performance, combined with a unique horror tale that packs an emotional wallop, has impressed critics, as Good Boy holds a 90% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences closely agreeing at 82%. The canine’s presence in the trailer also spiraled into exceptional box office returns for the modestly budgeted film, which was reportedly made for as little as $70,000 over three years. Good Boy’s current worldwide gross sits at $8.6 million, proving to be a bold idea that paid off for co-writer and director Ben Leonberg, Indy’s owner.

Good Boy is also hoping to see Indy earn further acting awards, with a recent effort made in a letter to the Academy, aspirationally eyeing an Oscar nomination. The problem stems from the canine actor being ineligible for a nomination, but Indy’s letter makes a plea, hoping “the academy throws us a bone.”

“Despite my critically acclaimed role in the recent film Good Boy – I have been deemed ineligible for the Best Actor category. This news feels as if someone has yanked my leash short, as apparently, I am not a good enough boy for you? I understand you have rules to protect my human co-stars, but no such rules exist to recognize the rich and complex contributions of our canine thespians. How many great performances must go overlooked before the academy throws us a bone?”

The Astras also nominated Good Boy for Best First Feature, with the movie looking to earn recognition beyond its star. Whether the horror sensation wins remains to be seen, but the door is now open for Indy to potentially earn further award recognition. Excitingly, it also presents a future in which more animal actors’ efforts are recognized in acting awards previously reserved for humans.
