A veterinarian has revealed five lesser-known foods that dog owners should consider adding to their pets’ diets to address various health concerns.

Ash, a vet with seven years of experience, frequently shares valuable tips on her @dogmommie1 TikTok account. In a recent video, she highlighted five foods “every dog owner should be aware of”. While the advice offers useful insights, she emphasized that for specific guidance tailored to your pet, consulting a vet is always recommended.

If you’ve noticed your dog’s breath has become less than pleasant, a simple solution could be apples. According to Ash, the bad breath may stem from “intestinal issues,” and offering your dog apples can help “detoxify their insides,” leaving their breath smelling significantly fresher, SurreyLive reports.

Blue Cross recommends apples as a “fantastic” addition to your dog’s diet, thanks to their high content of vitamins A and C, as well as dietary fiber. Not only do they help keep your dog’s teeth clean, but they also aid in freshening their breath.

However, always remember to remove the core and seeds before feeding them to your pet, as the seeds contain small amounts of cyanide, a toxin that is released when chewed.

Ash highlights corn as a valuable addition to your dog’s diet, packed with linoleic acid, a nutrient they need but cannot produce naturally.

This essential fatty acid helps promote a healthy, shiny coat and can even alleviate itchy skin. According to Vets Now, sweetcorn is a healthy option for dogs, but it’s crucial to remove it from the cob before serving.

They say: “The kernels contain protein, natural antioxidants and essential fatty acids and are a great source of energy.” Meanwhile, corn on the cob can be dangerous and cause injuries, so it’s important to be careful.

Ash recommends incorporating organic yogurt into your dog’s diet, as it helps them feel full without adding unnecessary calories and can even alleviate constipation.

Purina nutritionist Karina Carbo-Johnson, MS, notes that plain, non-fat yogurt, free from sweeteners or preservatives, is a healthy choice, providing essential calcium and protein for your pet. However, it’s important to avoid yogurts containing xylitol or any flavored varieties, as they can be harmful to dogs.

Ash also suggests adding carrots to your dog’s diet, noting their benefits for older dogs, particularly in reducing the risk of cataracts. In addition to improving eye health, carrots help clear toxins and promote fresher breath, making them a tasty and health-boosting treat for your pet.

The Blue Cross agrees, saying: “Carrots make a great snack and are a natural dental stick for your dog to chew on. They are high in fibre and low in calories, making them a perfect treat.”

Lastly, Ash highlights the benefits of blueberries for dogs, describing them as “packed with antioxidants that slow down ageing” and a powerful immune booster. Purina confirms that blueberries are not only safe but also offer a healthy treat, containing antioxidants, vitamins C and K.

However, it’s important to note that these foods should be fed in moderation. Overfeeding could lead to gastrointestinal upset and diarrhoea.

If you’re unsure about what to feed your dog, consult with a vet, as each breed has different dietary needs.
