A Visually Amazing and Unique Creation
We’ve already been on this emotional journey. In our 4/5 review of Grief like a stray dog, we concluded that this is a powerful and impactful experience:
“I haven’t heard the term interactive play often, but for this experience, it fits perfectly… Ultimately, Grief like a stray dog is a visually amazing and unique creation, delivering a powerful and impactful story that resonates deeply with the tragic conflicts of our own time.“
A Meditation on War
The story of Grief like a stray dog is set during the height of World War II. You will experience the journey of Nadia, a thirteen-year-old postwoman in a tight-knit rural community near one of the most brutal battlefields of the Eastern Front. Her job is to deliver papers, letters, and, most tragically, the death notifications to the families of those killed in action.
The character of Nadia is based on the author’s own grandmother, and most of the character arcs, plot points, and even many of the letters, are based on real war stories told by older relatives and locals.
This is a visual novel with elements of an adventure game, but it’s best described as an interactive play. Player input is minimal because you are more of a passenger on an emotional journey than an agent who is actively changing the narrative.
The experience lasts between 60-80 minutes and is designed to be taken in as a whole.
The main visual inspirations for the game were children’s drawings, neo-expressionism, and Soviet-era book illustrations, creating a truly unique and author-driven 2D art style. This is all accompanied by a disturbing and unusual soundtrack that perfectly complements the poignant story.
