WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – “Dogs of DoG Street” will return to Colonial Williamsburg for its second year, but this time with a spooky twist.

Dogs and their owners can join Colonial Williamsburg mascot Liberty and her owner, George Washington, in a Halloween-themed costume contest!

The event takes place on October 15 and will benefit the Heritage Humane Society.

Participants are asked to bring a donation from one of the following items on Heritage Humane Society’s wish list:

    Creamy low-fat peanut butter
    Large Kong-brand dog toys
    Chicken broth
    Yesterday’s News-brand cat litter
    Paper towels & toilet paper
    Disinfecting wipes
    Laundry detergent (HE preferred)
    Bleach
Soft and chewy dog treats/Pedigree Dentastix-brand
Canned cat and kitten food (non-fish flavors)

The event will start at 8 a.m., when chefs from Colonial Williamsburg will make gourmet dog treats at the Williamsburg Farmers Market in Merchants Square.

Check in for the event will be open from 9:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on the Palace Green. Participants can drop off their donation items, and pose with their pets for a photo. There will also be a canine agility demonstration and information about the Historical Hounds greyhound rescue.

The costume contest will begin at 10:30 a.m. on the Market Square State. Judges will choose the finalists based on originality and the execution of their costumes, but the audience’s applause will determine the winner.

At 11 a.m., George Washington and Liberty will greet everyone and lead the walk, which will go from Duke of Gloucester Street to Capitol Circle.

After the walk, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. a live auction will feature modern and 18th century-inspired pet products will take place back at the Market Square Stage.

Additional information is available at colonialwilliamsburg.com/dogs, on the event Facebook page, by calling 1-855-296-6627, or by visiting Colonial Williamsburg @colonialwmsburg on Twitter and Instagram.
