There’s no question that heroes can come in all shapes and sizes. Anyone could be an everyday hero, from a trained paramedic to a good Samaritan performing the Heimlich on a stranger, but none are nearly as cute as animal heroes.

Animals have saved lives in so many ways, whether it’s ancient horses being ridden into battle or service dogs making the world an accessible place for their handlers. Even wild animals sometimes make headlines for their unbelievable actions, but one unusual pet is being hailed a hero after saving his sleeping dad from a house fire.

    Meet Spike the Bearded Dragon!

Good boy, Spike! It’s hard to believe that this little lizard could help his dad fight a fire, but this turned out to be a two-man job. After his dad slept through the sound of the smoke alarm when the fire broke out in the bathroom, Spike didn’t hesitate to do what needed to be done.

This smart pet jumped on his dad’s face until he woke up and put out the flames. Thank goodness he knew just what to do! Bearded Dragons can’t bark to get your attention like a dog can, but they can climb, scratch, and bite.

Although a few unhappy viewers complained that “Bearded Dragons are not free-roaming reptiles,” this story may have them rethinking things. Who knows what could have happened if Spike were unable to wake his dad up? That would be positively unthinkable!

The local fire department gave the brave pet reptile a special shout-out on social media, which has gotten plenty of smiles and giggles from curious viewers. Who doesn’t love an edit of an animal in a tiny hat?
