Die Bären-Auge Sicht auf Alameda für 3 März 2024

I think it’s pretty obvious that, while I am a mixed breed canine, I identify as a German Shepherd. Thus, my attempt at translating the BEV into German. If it’s not correct, you can blame Google Translate.

I had never thought much about my heritage until I read about the dog-friendly restaurants in FAAS’s Alameda Pet Guide. One of their featured restaurants was Speisekammer. Click to read  the pet guide online.

Speisekammer is Alameda’s only restaurant that features German food and beverages. It is also one of the few dining establishments that welcomes canines in their outdoor seating area. And they have a special menu just for us! I stopped by to check it out and was impressed with the entire setup.

There is a large outdoor dining area with bench type seating and umbrellas, and the inside is warm and inviting. For all the human companions, music is performed live on Saturday evenings. I put together a video of my trip.

Our server Kara was so delightful. She brought me a water bowl and presented the Hundekarte (dog menu). YUM! The ground chicken-based dish was delicious and healthy. I understand that the human food is also pretty darn tasty as well. This is definitely a four-paw restaurant, and I will be back again on a sunny day to enjoy the inviting patio.

Mouf inspects a voting station signMarch is a busy month, so I wanted to highlight just a few things going on that you might want to participate in. At the top of the list is to be sure to vote by Tuesday. I stopped by the official polling location on Central Avenue to check it out. I couldn’t find the German translation voting instructions on the sign, though.

Alameda Post - Bear's Eye View of Alameda for March 3, 2024. Political signsThere are many decisions to make including about Measure E (school funding) and Alameda’s own Tony Daysog’s campaign for Congress. We are nonpartisan here at die BAS (the BEV) so I can’t officially endorse a particular candidate or measure.

Alameda Post - Bear's Eye View of Alameda for March 3, 2024. Girl Scout cookies for sale

March is when the Girl Scout cookie sales start. My human companion is so committed to helping these local nonprofits, he bought six boxes (four Thin Mints & two Do-Si-Does) to support the organization. If history repeats itself, he will be back soon to “support” the scouts again with the purchase of another six boxes. He’s addicted for sure. Fortunately, the sale only lasts for a few weeks.

Alameda Post - Alameda Restaurant Week posterThe first ten days of this month has been designated Alameda Restaurant Week by the City. There are some great deals out there! Please support your favorite dining establishment and take this opportunity to try a new restaurant.

Alameda Post - Bear's Eye View of Alameda for March 3, 2024. A colorful display in honor of Black History Month

February was Black History Month, but it took until the 29th of the month before I found this really great sign. So, while it’s a bit late, happy Black History Month to all.

I also want to thank all of you Bay Farmers and Harbor Bay Isle folks who sent suggestions for walks in the 94502 area. This week, I am featuring my Wednesday walk along the Ratto Road lagoon. I walked the path and then checked out the mystery poet’s ongoing work and walked back along Ratto Road. Check out the video above showing all the sights.

One thing I did notice was that this area is adjacent to the flightpath of a lot of airplanes. It gets a bit noisy at times.

My human companion found a utility box cover from “Alameda P & T Communications.” Apparently, there was some dust-up about this AMP predecessor. He said that the old time Alamedans would understand the significance of the name.

WARNING:  This walk contained squirrels. Use at your own risk.

The Alameda Island Rocks folks were busy this week with a few additions to the street gallery. Also, kudos to the City of Alameda for jumping on the repair of the parking sign that blew over in the big storm of a few weeks ago.

And, just as a reminder, there is no place on our island for hate.
