These cute and cuddly canines may look like predators, but their personalities are far from it.
Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and choosing the right breed for you can feel like a major decision. You need to find a furry friend that fits both your lifestyle and your personality.
The fashion lovers among us may opt for a toy-sized pooch like a Chihuahua or Miniature Dachshund, while families with kids may go for a friendly Golden Retriever or Black Lab.
But pet owners with an appreciation for the domestic dog’s oldest ancestor, the wolf, may opt for a more majestic and historic-looking breed. And while we’re all probably familiar with the wolf-like Husky, there’s a whole plethora of breeds that have retained the features of their wilder ancestors.
For those interested in breeds with this unique look, experts at Cadet Pet have shared a list of 11 dog breeds that look like wolves. Here are the wolfy pooches that made the cut.
11 dog breeds that look like wolves
1. Siberian Husky
These fluffballs were originally trained to be sled dogs. They need one to two hours of daily exercise to release their pent-up energy. These pooches shouldn’t be kept in small flats due to their size and exercise needs, so be wary of this when looking to adopt.
2. Alaskan Malamute
The Alaskan Malamute is a powerful and high-energy pooch. But be mindful of their sensitivity to heat during the summer, and avoid spending time outside for an extended period during hot weather, especially when on a long walk.
3. Alaskan Klee Kai
This wee pup is often referred to as a ‘mini Husky’, and it gets it name from an Inuit word meaning “little dog.”
4. Czechoslovakian Wolfdog
Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs were initially bred with a German Shepherd and a Carpathian wolf for military purposes.
They are legal to own in the UK, but require extensive training. These pooches certainly need an experienced owner due to their strength and size.
5. Saarloos Wolfdog
Also derived from a German Shepherd and a European wolf, Saarloos Wolfdogs are eager to learn, curious, and seek purpose. They also adore being the centre of attention!
6. Utonagan
Meaning ‘spirit of the wolf’, the Utonagan stems from the Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, and German Shepherd, as well as several other unidentified breeds. They’re incredibly strong and intelligent, but are very rare in the UK.
7. Northern Inuit
Almost identical to the Utonagan breed, the Northern Inuit is commonly thought to hail from the UK originally. But some theories suggest that they came from Canada or Greenland.
8. Tamaskan
In the same bloodline as the Utonagan and Northern Inuit, these good-natured dogs are considered friendly and outgoing. While not one of the more popular breeds, they can be adopted in the UK.
9. Finnish Lapphund
These pooches are highly affectionate toward friends and strangers, and are great for families with young children. But they do bark and shed regularly, so require extensive grooming.
10. Samoyed
These dogs are one of the most genetically similar to their wolf ancestors, and they used to herd reindeer for the Samoyed people in Siberia.
11. Blue Bay Shepherd
This wolf-dog shepherd mix of breeds originated in Palm Bay, Florida, which is where their name stems from. They usually sport a beautiful blue coat, but they can also vary in colours like beige or white.
