Getting a dog is a huge decision for any family, and there are a number of important things to consider when choosing which breed suits your needs. Along with their fur type, personality and exercise requirements, the size of your dog can fundamentally change the way they should be looked after.

For example, those living in small flats should steer clear of large breeds like Greyhounds or Huskies, as they need more living space compared to smaller pooches. If you’re getting a puppy, it will obviously start off as a tiny fluffball, but it could grow into a huge hound depending on which breed you’ve gone for.

However, many breeds of dog will remain small into adulthood, which is ideal for pet owners with small living spaces. With this in mind, dog experts at Brookhaven Animal Hospital have rounded up a list of little pups that stay pocket-sized forever for owners who don’t have enough space for a massive pooch.

So, here are 11 of the smallest dog breeds best suited for households with little space.

    1. Affenpinscher

Also known as a little ‘black devil’ dog, this pooch was bred to hunt rodents, according to the experts.

This wire-haired dog is known for its mischievous character, and they often act much bigger than their boots.

    2. Alaskan Klee Kai

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a relatively new breed of dog.

It gets its name from an Inuit term translated as “small dog”.

This intelligent breed closely resembles a smaller version of the Siberian Husky and an adult can weigh just 15 pounds.

    3. Chihuahua

A classic small dog, the Chihuahua can pack a powerful personality into its little body.

This is the world’s smallest dog breed and is popular for its loyalty, enthusiasm, and confidence.

    4. Miniature Dachshund

These popular pooches can measure up to six inches at the shoulder and they are known to be playful and good with kids.

They come in three different coat types: Smooth or short, Wire, and Long-Hair.

    5. Boston Terrier

While originally bred to be fighting dogs, the Boston Terriers of today are incredibly gentle and affectionate little companions for families.

These pocket-sized pups weigh less than 25 pounds.

    6. Pomeranian

A Pomeranian is exceptionally loyal to its owners, and is a great watchdog that enjoys playing indoors or going for short outdoor adventures.

    7. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

This gentle and loving toy-sized dog breed thrives as the heart of a family.

A King Charles can easily adapt to any living situation, and they’re popular for being friendly and easy to housetrain.

    8. Pug

Originally bred to be lap dogs by the Shang Dynasty, Pugs have taken the responsibility of being companion dogs for over two thousand years.

They weren’t always this small, though. After Pugs were imported to the Netherlands from China, they were intentionally bred to become smaller.

    9. Havanese

The Havanese is a member of the Bichon family and officially the national dog of Cuba.

Their energetic and alert nature makes them great watchdogs for the house.

    10. Papillon

Sometimes referred to as the butterfly dog because of its ears, the Papillon is a highly trainable companion dog.

They also get along well with other pets and strangers.

    11. Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier is a hypoallergenic breed and one of the smallest terrier-type dogs.

They are brave, feisty, and bossy in nature.
